Collaborative Kindness

Tonight's post is short. I am being roasted on the Making Box at 8 pm. Feel free to log in and join the laughs. I will warn you about my unreasonably long hair. Almost took scissors to it this afternoon. Here is the link if you want to join in:
How do I get my self into these things? I call that 'taking one for the team'.
The masks continued to roll in today. A fellow warrior is dropping by my back door next week to take 200 to Wasauksing First Nation, on Parry Island. This is the second First Nation group we are supporting. I love this phenomenon; an effort started by ordinary folks grows into something so big that the positive ripple effects cannot be measured. It makes me so proud to be part of this growing effort. You have all heard of the hummingbird parable?
The story begins with the Great Forest catching on fire, and the animals within it fleeing for their lives. All save one. Dukdukdiya, the tiny hummingbird, would not abandon the forest. She flies to the stream, picks up a single drop of water, and drops it on the raging fire. Again and again she continues her efforts against the inferno at great personal risk. The other animals watch on the outskirts, warning Dukdukdiya of the dangers; they lament that there is nothing they can do in such a situation. Dukdukdiya listens but continues her task. Finally, the bear, one of the biggest creatures in the forest, asks her what she hopes to accomplish. The story concludes with this final sentence:
Without stopping, Dukdukdiya looked down at all of the animals. She said, “I am doing what I can.”
The best part of all of this? If many of us follow and run towards the fire, we can accomplish great things with little risk. We can put the fire out. I will say it again. COVID 19 cannot and will not triumph over this kind of collaborative kindness.
A caution:
Please do not underestimate how dangerous this virus is. In Ontario, we are not out of the woods. We have flattened the curve but that curve is not yet coming down. There are still new infections every day. There are still people dying especially in our longterm care facilities.
Ontario has extended it's emergency declaration to May 19th. We cannot gather in groups greater than 5 and we must remain six feet apart. This announcement comes on the eve of the Mother's Day weekend. I will not see my children this weekend. Please do not give up. COVID 19 is so infectious that if just a few of us decide to loosen the restrictions and have a BBQ for mom, the curve will no longer be flat and we will be forced inside again. Our leaders are leading us well as are our health experts. If you catch and spread the virus this weekend, remember, 10 % of patients require hospital admission and for them the disease is agonizing. 2 % will die.
We are so close. Keep up the good fight. Please.

Oh, and today's picture is of a surgical tray. Skin cancers and pre-cancerous lesions keep growing despite COVID 19. See your doctor if you have a worrisome lesion. Most skin cancers are easily treated if they are dealt with early.
