Ok folks. Today was another day filled with good news. So much so that even the major networks could not help but report on more good than bad news. That's the ticket.
So, here we go:
Almost all the provinces outside of Ontario and Quebec had either no new cases today or numbers in the single or low double digits. Man have we done so well
New infection rates are higher in Quebec and Ontario due to the high population densities in larger cities like Toronto and Montreal and to the timing of Quebec's March break. Cities around the world with international airports have all experienced a much higher level of infections.
We have almost tested 1M people in Canada and only 65,000 have tested positive. That is a low rate of infection and an even lower death rate ( 4,000 ) with many of those deaths, unfortunately, in longterm care.
There are 18,000 cases in Ontario with 13,000 recovered.
Alberta joins the list of provinces with more than 50 % of COVID 19 cases recovered
And music to my ears.....
Ontario will relax some of its coronavirus restrictions in the days ahead, moving with "cautious optimism" to allow garden centres, nurseries, hardware stores and safety supply stores to reopen so long as they adhere to the same public health measures currently in place at grocery stores.
Big breath. This is outstanding.
Today, we ran a children's clinic, bringing in all of our 1 year old and 18 month old babes for their well child checks and immunizations. I so love the kids. Eighteen month olds really struggle with this visit, but even the most fearful gave me a shy smile when they saw my big bird cap and my orange and blue gloves. Please do not delay in getting your child immunized ( that's a dangerous comment to make on Facebook, so I have learned. No offence meant for the anti-vaxxers, but vaccines save millions of lives every year.) We don't want to replace the COVID 19 pandemic with an outbreak of polio or diptheria.
Today reminded me of children's day at the clinic in Lesotho years ago when half the children were critically ill and many died while waiting in the waiting room. Our global efforts there have made a huge difference in sub Saharan Africa. We will continue to fight that pandemic as well. Blessings to the 50 kids we care for in foster homes in Lesotho. We have your back in the COVID 19 pandemic as well.
Two hundred and fifty more cloth masks made their way through my back door today, from five different people. God bless you all. At one point, I opened the back door to a line up of people, properly distanced, not waiting for appointments, but waiting to drop of donations. Read that again. Lining up to make donations. Read it just one more time. It makes my heart sing. That's the best of us pouring out by the bucket load.
As Christine and I left the clinic tonight, I opened the door one last time for the day, and there at may feet was a bag filled with surgical masks. We cried. Without surgical masks, I can't keep my practise open. It is a vital piece of PPE needed for both the community practices and the COVID 19 clinic but provincial supplies are still lacking. I only had enough to keep my clinic open for a few more weeks. Word got out and of course, you solved that problem too.
Sir Edmund Burke once said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men and women to do nothing."
There are so many of us doing so much more than 'nothing'. COVID 19 simply cannot triumph. Well done.
Board meeting tonight but after that, I will head to bed with a singing heart thanks to you.
