Discipline and Determination

Hey, Do you know this guy, Goerge Laraque? He is a Canadian sports commentator, politician and former hockey player. He is 42 and very fit. He was not taking this whole COVID 19 thing seriously, until he caught it. He became seriously ill and was hospitalized. Now he is recovering at home. His message to people his age, "Take this seriously, if not for yourself, than for the people around you."
I stood in line outside a grocery store yesterday morning. There were about 10 of us in line. We were appropriately distanced but only two of us were wearing a mask. The wind was wicked. If any of the un-masked folks had been in the early, asymptomatic phase of COVID 19, and coughed, that wind would have whipped the virus onto many of the faces waiting in line. And BHAM, just like that, a whole group of people would have been infected with COVID 19. . If 10 of us picked up the virus, one person in that line would have ended up in hospital seriously ill with a good chance of dying.
I have been hearing all weekend about people who don't believe this virus is a big deal. Please don't let the first time you take it seriously be when your swab comes back positive and you can no longer breathe without support.
The current advice from Canada’s Chief Medical Officer is that individuals should wear a non-medical face mask when they are unable to maintain proper physical distance from one another. Wear it in public. There are no guarantees that you can always maintain that distance. This is especially important as we move back into work spaces.
The number of (COVID-19) cases in Austria dropped from 90 to 10 cases per one million people, two weeks after the government required everyone to wear a face mask on April 6.
I am going to activate around this by contacting our local MPP and MP. I think masks should be mandatory in Canada. If anyone is interested in joining a letter writing campaign, details will follow.
And now, the reason for my very happy face on Mother's day? No, I did not see my children but I did facetime them and yes it was cold, quiet and a little bit lonely but, when I heard this, I wanted to run down my driveway yelping with joy. I actually had that visual in my head!
Ontario reported 294 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the lowest daily number of new cases since March 31.
UNDER 300. Yep. We did that! UNDER 300.
The number of hospitalized patients has also dropped. There are 55 fewer people in hospital, eight fewer in intensive care and 18 fewer patients on ventilators.
AND, 73 % of the folks with COVID 19 in Ontario have recovered.
It is your discipline, your determination that is creating this amazing outcome. We are doing this. And as a result, our restrictions will be lessened. But, we need to keep this up for at least 2 more weeks. I know there are folks that are suffering in so many different ways. I wish this virus had never touched our beautiful country. But is has. We are on the right path. The alternative, had we not followed the social distancing, stay at home orders would have been 14 million infected at this point with half a million deaths ( according to projections). Flattening that curve was not just watching the rate of infections decline, it allowed us to avoid a human catastrophe.
Please stay home and keep your distance you lovely bunch of people. You are doing this. It is terribly difficult but you have made such a difference.
Happy Mother's Day.
Anne-Marie
